Karena Avedissian is a doctoral researcher at the Centre for Russian and Eastern European Studies at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. She completed her BA in Political Science at the University of California, Riverside (2003), and her MSc in Russian Studies at the University of Birmingham (2004). Since 2007, she has been involved in academic projects ranging from publishing abstracts about Encyclopaedias on Muslim civilizations, to studying the impact of constitutional arrangements in Sudan. Her main research interests however lie in the area of nationalism, identity, and minorities, with a focus on social movements and the North Caucasus.
