Educational Work

LSES operates on the basis of one of the most important principles of HSE University: that education and research are inseparable. From the very beginning, the working relationships in the Laboratory were lined up following the model of a fraternalist organization, where all decisions are made collectively and there is no hierarchical gap between the older and younger generations of scholars. Ambitious students who are motivated to do research can always count on the support of the Laboratory. They receive the opportunity to become a part of the team and, what is very important, to take part in academic projects of LSES, participate in research at the Laboratory, in regular scholarly discussions, as well as publication and translation programs.

Since 2010, LSES has hosted summer sociological practical training, when students can dedicate themselves to research during their summer break. They gain experience through working in the Laboratory and by the end of their BA programme they not only possess a full set of required research skills, but also in many cases a considerable scholarly groundwork on economic and sociological problems which are of interest for them.

The experts of the Laboratory give courses on economic sociology in the departments of HSE at all levels of education. Recently, it has become possible to take these courses online on the Open Education and Coursera Internet platforms.

The team of LSES teaches a basic course on Economic Sociology for various departments of the Higher School of Economics. An annual workshop dedicated to this subject was organized at the Department of Social Sciences. Fourth year students at the Department of Sociology can choose to specialize in economic sociology (and regularly do so). Laboratory experts teach in the Master’s Programme in Applied Methods of Social Analysis of Markets. The Economic Sociology and Demography track is part of the Doctoral School in Sociology.

LSES is actively engaged in sociological and analytical projects of the University, aimed at organizing more effective practical training at HSE University. The Laboratory carries out both empirical study of the criteria for choosing a particular specialization by the students, and methodological analysis of evaluation procedures, followed by the professors in their grading of students’ assignments. The Laboratory experts work on adapting modern technologies for improving the effectiveness of educational processes at the University.
